Dry Skin and Its Care

Dry Skin, termed xerosis by dermatologists, refers to a common skin type that is generally drier and less oily. Flaky, itchy skin is often observed on the face, arms or legs. Certain disease states, such as diabetes, liver and kidney abnormalities, and other internal problems can also result in dry skin. As we age, our skin becomes increasingly drier. This is due in part to a decrease in the production of sebum and natural moisturizing factors. More recently, new research has indicated that the skin barrier fuction plays significant role as well.
