Content analysis of Korean daily newspapers from the aspect of health education for the past 10 years

보건학과/석사[한글] [영문] Mass media are intensively employed in public health affairs. In order to discover how mass media are used is reporting problems in the field of public health, daily newspapers with nationwide circulation were chosen and surveyed through the content analysis method. The survey was conducted for 5 months from November 20, 1968 to April 30, 1969. Among the newspapers, such leading dailies as the Dong-A Ilbo, the Chosun Ilbo, and the Hankook Ilbo were selected and surveyed. The survey covering the 1959-1968 period was made on the five biennial editions during the period, i.e. editions of 1960, 1962, 1966 and 1968. The following conclusions have been drown : 1. Among a total of 14.103 health articles, the majority or 63% dealt with accidents, followed by 11.8% for infectious diseases and 4.9% for food sanitation. 2. By season one-third of the total or 4,427 articles were reported during the summer (June, July and August) and concerned accidents, food sanitation, environmental sanitation and infectious diseases. Howeverm, there were no seasonal characteristics. 3. In regard to the space allocated for health articles in newspapers, almost half or 48.8% were handled in one-column spaces, while only 6.5% appeared on tops of pages, showing that straight mews dealing with health are generally neglected. 4. Cuts in the headlines occupied only 9.3% of the total news, and 14.3% carried related photographs. 5. Articles which simply reported facts accounted for 88% of the total, showing that the newspapers usually reported events passively. The percentage of such articles decreased from 86% to 77% in later years, whereas editorials and features gradually increased.restrictio
