Helicobacter pylori infection leads to gastroduodenal inflammation, peptic ulceration, and gastric carcinoma. Moreover, H. pylori may induce disease-specific protein expression in gastric epithelial cells. The present study was aimed at determining differentially expressed proteins in H. pylori-infected gastric epithelial AGS cells. AGS cells were treated with H. pylori at a bacterium/cell ratio of 300:1 for 12 h. Altered protein patterns as separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis using pH gradients of 4-7 were conclusively identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis of the peptide digests.
