BACKGROUND: Besides distal embolization of thrombus and plaque debris, locally increased inflammatory markers at the site of ruptured plaque in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are thought to have an adverse impact on myocardial reperfusion during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
