The Financial Literacy: the case of college students

Dissertação de mestrado em Estudos de GestãoAinda a recuperar das crises de 2008 e 2011, que provocaram dificuldades financeiras em muitas famílias portuguesas, a Literacia Financeira assumiu na sociedade um papel de especial relevância, pois permite a tomada de decisões e comportamentos financeiros de forma consciencializada com o objetivo de melhorar o bem-estar. O presente estudo tem como objetivo determinar o Nível de Literacia Financeira de uma amostra de estudantes do ensino superior, bem como determinar os principais fatores influenciadores da Literacia Financeira. O interesse no estudo pelos alunos do ensino superior deve-se ao facto de se pretender verificar se os conhecimentos ao nível financeiro se coadunam com uma faixa de população com níveis de educação bastante elevados. Para esse efeito elaboramos um questionário composto por 18 questões que permite medir o Nível de Literacia Financeira, relativas aos Conhecimentos Financeiros Gerais, Poupanças e Financiamentos, Seguros e Investimentos. A amostra do estudo foi composta por 842 alunos do 1.º e 2.º ciclo da Universidade do Minho. Os resultados obtidos indicam que o Nível de Literacia Financeira dos alunos da amostra é baixo, apresentando um valor médio de 55,8%. Também identificamos alguns fatores influenciadores do Nível de Literacia Financeira dos estudantes do ensino superior, nomeadamente, o facto do curso frequentado pelo aluno ser da área da Economia e Gestão, a idade e o facto de ter uma atividade profissional além de estudante contribuírem para o aumento da Literacia Financeira. No entanto, não verificamos diferenças estatisticamente significativas relativamente ao grau de ensino que frequenta, o ano de licenciatura, o género.Still recovering from the crises of 2008 and 2011, which caused financial difficulties in many Portuguese families, Financial Literacy took on a particularly important role in society, since it allows for financial decisions and behaviours in a conscientious way with the aim of improving the well-being. The present study aims to determine the Financial Literacy Level of a sample of higher education students, as well as determine the main factors influencing their Financial Literacy. The interest in studying students of higher education is because they hold high levels of education and we wonder it this education is also higher in financial knowledge. For this purpose, we have conducted a questionnaire composed of 18 questions that have allowed us to measure the level of Financial Literacy, related to General Financial Knowledge, Savings and Financing, Insurance and Investments. The study sample was composed of 842 students from the 1st and 2nd cycle level of study of University of Minho. The results indicate that the level of financial literacy of the students in the sample is low, with an average value of 55.8%. We also identified some factors influencing the Financial Literacy Level of students of higher education, namely, the course attended by the student is in the area of Economics and Management, the age and the fact of having a professional activity besides student contribute to the increase of Financial Literacy. However, we did not find statistically significant differences regarding the degree of education that attends, the year of graduation, and gender
