Bio-inspired intelligent optimization of a nonlinear flood routing model through bat algorithm

RESUMEN: Los métodos de estimación de inundación son unas técnicas para predecir los cambios de flujo del agua a medida que se mueven a través de un rio natural, un canal artificial o un reservorio. Estos son usados ampliamente en campos como la predicción de inundaciones, el diseño de reservorios, la planificación geográfica y muchos otros. A medida que la masa de agua se propaga a través del cauce (que previamente ya tiene una masa propia de agua), se produce por un lado un efecto de transmisión (o desplazamiento) de la onda de agua a través del cauce, y por otro lado se produce un efecto laminador sobre la onda (o disminución del caudal punta). Para la modelización matemática de los efectos de transmisión y laminación de la onda a lo largo del cauce existen varios métodos, los cuales nos permiten obtener el hidrograma (variación en el tiempo del caudal) de la avenida en diferentes puntos de un cauce a través de un caudal de entrada. Una de las técnicas más populares y ampliamente utilizadas es el método de Muskingum, ya que es conceptualmente simple y solo depende de unos pocos parámetros que se pueden estimar a partir de los registros históricos de entrada/salida. Sin embargo la estimación de dichos parámetros para el caso no lineal sigue siendo una tarea difícil. En este documento presentamos un método basado en una poderosa técnica de inteligencia de enjambre llamado algoritmo Bat para resolver el problema de estimación de parámetros del modelo no lineal de Muskingum para rutas de inundación. El algoritmo Bat pertenece a la familia de los algoritmos inspirados en la naturaleza y fue propuesto por el Profesor Xin-She Yang en 2010, con destacables aplicaciones en dominios industriales y científicos. Pese a su gran versatilidad este algoritmo nunca se había aplicado hasta ahora en el contexto de la hidrología. El algoritmo Bat se engloba dentro de la inteligencia de enjambres, que es aquella que modela el comportamiento colectivo de sistemas des- centralizados y auto-organizados, que interactúan localmente entre sí y con su entorno, generando pautas de funcionamiento lógicas, independientemente del origen de estos enjambre (natural o artificial) . Este concepto se emplea en el campo de la inteligencia artificial. Nuestra implementación se aplica a un ejemplo ilustrativo utilizado como punto de referencia en el campo con buenos resultados. Nuestros resultados experimentales muestran que este método supera a otros métodos de vanguardia en el campo como el Particle Swarm Intelligence (PSO).ABSTRACT: Flood estimation methods are techniques for predicting changes in water flow as they move through a natural river, an artificial channel or a reservoir. These are widely used in fields such as flood forecasting, reservoir design, geographic planning and many others. As the mass of water propagates through the channel (which has already its own mass of water), on the one hand there is an effect of transmission (or displacement) of the water wave through the channel, and on the other hand, there is a laminating effect on the wave (or decrease in peak flow). For the mathematical modeling of the effects of transmission and rolling of the wave along the channel there are several methods, which allow us to obtain the hydrogram (variation of the flow as a function of time) of the avenue in different points of a channel through an input flow. One of the most popular and widely used techniques is the Muskingum method, since it is conceptually simple and only depends on a few parameters that can be estimated from the historical input/outpur records. However, the estimation of these parameters for the non-linear case is still a difficult task. In this document we present a method based on a powerful swarm intelligence technique called the Bat algorithm to solve the problem of parameter estimation of the non-linear Muskingum model for channel routing. The Bat algorithm belongs to the family of algorithms inspired by nature and was proposed by Professor Xin-She Yang in 2010, with outstanding applications in industrial and scientific domains. Despite this versatility, it seems that this algorithm has never been applied until now in the context of hydrology. The Bat algorithm is encompassed within the intelligence of swarms, understood as the one that models the collective behavior of decentralized and self-organized systems that interact locally with each other and with their environment, generating logical operating patterns, regardless of the origin of these swarm (natural or artificial). This concept is used in the field of artificial intelligence. Our implementation is applied to an illustrative example used as a reference point in the field with good results. Our experimental results show that this method outperforms other cutting-edge methods in the field such as the Particle Swarm Intelligence (PSO).Máster en Investigación en Ingeniería Industria
