Zaburzenia homeostazy transportu cholesterolu są sercem powstałych zmian miażdżycowych. W ich trakcie komórki makrofagów zostają przeładowane cholesterolem i innymi lipidami, podczas wchłaniania utlenionych lipoprotein o niskiej gęstości (oxLDL).
