Aux origines de la sociologie. « Le contrat social de Rousseau » d’Émile Durkheim (1918)

International audienceThis paper studies the way in which Durkheim recaptured Rousseau’s political philosophy. The founder, after Auguste Comte, of sociology in France adopts an ambivalent attitude towards the author of the Second Discourse and the Social Contract: on the one hand, he pays tribute to the political theorist who understood the empirical emergence of the social bond; on the other, he criticizes social contract theories. It is between these two limits that Durkheim’s reappropriation, reconstruction, and reassessment of Rousseau must be situated: the rise of the collective subject is at the heart of their posthumous dialogue. This contribution will therefore address the Durkheimian interpretation of the Second Discourse, as well as his reading of the Geneva manuscript. I will show by what subtle distortion of the text Durkheim uses his own interpretation of Rousseau to read him as the ancestor of the idea of a “social realm,” and explain how the Durkheimian reading of the Social Contract carries out an original reinterpretation of the “general will” in sociological terms.Cette contribution se propose d’étudier la manière dont Durkheim s’est réapproprié la philosophie de Rousseau. Le fondateur, après Auguste Comte, de la sociologie en France adopte une attitude ambivalente à l’égard de l’auteur du second Discours et du Contrat social : d’un côté, l’hommage rendu à celui qui a pensé la genèse empirique des rapports sociaux ; de l’autre, la critique de l’artificialisme du penseur du contrat. C’est entre ces deux limites qu’il faudra situer la réappropriation durkheimienne de Rousseau, qui est une reconstruction et une réactualisation : la question de la genèse du sujet collectif est au cœur de leur dialogue posthume. Cette contribution reviendra donc sur l’interprétation durkheimienne du second Discours, ainsi que sur sa lecture du manuscrit de Genève. Il s’agira de montrer par quelle subtile distorsion du texte Durkheim parvient à imposer son exégèse de Rousseau et à en faire l’ancêtre de l’idée de « règne social », et de cerner comment la lecture durkheimienne du Contrat social procède à une réinterprétation originale de la théorie de la « volonté générale » dans des termes sociologiques
