This article explores the sociological reasons why an evaluation device to measure the state of mind of employees was introduced in the 1990s and then dropped in 2012 in a multinational retail company. It is based on an ethnographic study conducted in the company’s human resources department and in one particular superstore where the device had been implemented. It also draws on interviews with employees, managers and senior executives of the company. It shows that this kind of evaluation device can be used by different groups for a variety of simultaneous purposes.
