International audienceThis article considers “witchcraft” as a problematic term. The ambiguity of this notion, corroborated by the colonial and missionary imagination, is due to an erroneous translation of local terms. Stripped of its equivocal and approximate character, “witchcraft” as a category of analysis makes it possible to understand the contemporary stakes of the Church of Zéphirin, including charismatic legitimacy, intergenerational tensions, and reproduction of the lineage structure. More than a fixed and essentialised phenomenon, the “witchcraft” complex thus appears as a mechanism conducive to the analysis of the microphysics of power: a mode of government, a corrective discipline, a condition for living together.
