Since the mid 1970s, there has been a considerable rise in the number of festivals and seasonal venues whose partial or complete programing is dedicated to international theatre. These festivals and seasonal venues—which today number in the hundreds—are mostly located in Western Europe and form vast yet informal circuits followed by Quebec theatre artists when touring abroad since the 1980s. Montreal is structurally part of such circuits since the establishment of the Festival de Théâtre des Amériques (1985-2006) and its successor the Festival TransAmériques (2007).
