Geologic control of building materials in traditional architecture. The exemplary study case of Nueva Tabarca island

Strength, porosity, fracturing degree and availability in the immediate surroundings were the most significant aspects for selecting a rock as building material in historical constructions. In the specific case of the Nueva Tabarca fortress and the San José Tower (both constructions located in the Nueva Tabarca island, SE of Spain) the selection of the building materials was limited to the outcropping rocks inside the island. The constructions of the initial phases of the fortress were built with a porous calcarenite. However, two different kinds of rocks were used in the last buildings: a black limestone in the lower parts of the buidings and the porous calcarenite in the up per parts. The use of the massive limestones provides resistance and durability to the building, as well as it preven ts the capillary uptake of salty water. En el caso de la construcción del fuerte de Nueva Tabarca y la Torre de San José (en la isla de Nueva Tabarca, frente las costas de la provincia de Alicante) la elección se limitaba a las rocas que afloraban en la isla. Las calcarenitas porosas fueron elegidas para las construcciones iniciales, mientras que en las últimas edificaciones se procedió a una combinación de caliza (para las zonas bajas) y calcarenita (para las zonas altas) con el fin de aumentar la durabilidad, la resistencia y frenar el ascenso capilar del agua a través de los muros.
