Strength, porosity, fracturing degree and availability in the immediate surroundings were the most significant aspects for selecting a rock as building material in historical constructions. In the specific case of the Nueva Tabarca fortress and the San José Tower (both constructions located in the Nueva Tabarca island, SE of Spain) the selection of the building materials was limited to the outcropping rocks inside the island. The constructions of the initial phases of the fortress were built with a porous calcarenite. However, two different kinds of rocks were used in the last buildings: a black limestone in the lower parts of the buidings and the porous calcarenite in the up per parts.
