Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the variable deletion of rhotics in coda position, particularly word-finally, in Brazilian Portuguese and American Spanish. Our main goal is to problematize the Convergent Outputs hypothesis (Schwindt, 2015), according to which two processes compete for the emergence of a single output form undergoing R-final deletion: an earlier one, which dialogues with morphology, and a more superficial one, phonetic and socially motivated. From the literature on the process, we find that the hypothesis is true for both systems.
