A representação escrava em O Jornal do Pilar: a execução de Francisco e a crise do escravismo em Alagoas (1874-1876)

This article problematizes the case of the Francisco slave, sentenced to death for the murder of Captain João Lima and his wife. The crime became famous because Francisco was the last one sentenced to capital punishment in Brazil. In fact, the entire trajectory of Francisco was documented in O Jornal do Pilar. Our intention is to search the pages of this journal and follow the trial of the captive. To start from this fact, we make considerations about the representation of slavery in the same periodical. Our intention is to understand the position of the editor, who sympathized with the suffering of the slaves, but did not embrace the abolitionist cause. In this way, we will discuss the bibliography on violent crimes committed by slaves and the specific legislation that provided for the death penalty since 1835. Finally, we will analyze the Census of 1872 and data on the enslaved population, we cross the qualitative and quantitative information to understand the transformations observed in the world of work in Alagoas.Este artigo problematiza o caso do escravo Francisco, condenado a morte pelo assassinato do capitão João Lima e esposa. O crime se tornou célebre pois Francisco foi o último condenado a pena capital no Brasil. Com efeito, toda a trajetória de Francisco foi documentada em O Jornal do Pilar. Nossa intenção é perscrutar as páginas desse periódico e acompanhar o julgamento do cativo. Para, partindo desse fato, tecer considerações sobre a representação da escravidão no mesmo jornal. Nossa intenção é entender a postura do editor, que se compadecia com o sofrimento dos escravizados, mas não abraçava a causa abolicionista. Desta forma, discutiremos a bibliografia sobre os crimes violentos cometidos por escravos e a legislação específica que previa a pena capital desde 1835. Por último, analisaremos o Censo de 1872 e os dados sobre a população escravizada, cruzando as informações qualitativas e quantitativas para compreender as transformações observadas no mundo do trabalho em Alagoas
