BACKGROUND Acute kidney injury (AKI) refers to a broad spectrum of kidney damage and is attributed a high morbidity and mortality rate at all degrees of severity. Obesity increases the risk for developing AKI. However, some studies have shown that obesity at onset of AKI is paradoxically associated with greater survival. The aim of this review is to explore the relationship between body mass index and survival in patients with AKI. METHODS An electronic search will be conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and CENTRAL using predefined search strategies.
