A STUDY ON THE TRANSLATION STRATEGIES APPLIED BY THE STUDENTS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITY OF BENGKULU

The purpose of this research was to find out the strategies applied by the students of English Education Study Program at University of Bengkulu in translating an English text into Bahasa Indonesia. This research was designed as a descriptive-quantitative research. The population of this research were 65 students of sixth semester students of English Language Education Study Program 2017/2018. The sample of this research was chosen by using total sampling technique. The instrument that is used in this research were questionnaire and an open-ended question. The result of this research showed that students applied all of the strategies that proposed by Chesterman (!997) which are Syntactic strategies, Semantic strategies, and Pragmatics strategies. The mean of each stratagy are 2.72 for Syntactic strategies, 2.89 for Semantic strategies, and 2.80 for Pragmatic strat e gies . All of thos e strat e gies wer e includ ed in “Moderate ” category. There are many reasons why the students used those strategies, but the researcher can concluded that many of them used those strategies because they think that it can help them in the translating process and help the translation is easy to be understood by the readers. Therefore, it can be concluded that all of sixth semester students od English Language Education Program used all strategies that proposed by Chesterman (1997)
