Effects of Climate Change on Forest Insects

Une des composantes principales des changements climatiques en cours est l’augmentation de température qui est un facteur clé de l’activité, du développement et de la répartition des insectes. Pour un certain nombre d’espèces de bioagresseurs forestiers, des modifications notables sont déjà observées : augmentation du nombre de générations des scolytes, extension de l’aire de répartition de la processionnaire du pin ou du bupreste des branches du chêne... Les changements climatiques impactent cependant tant les espèces d’insectes phytophages que leurs ennemis naturels et leurs essences hôtes. De plus, les grandes capacités adaptatives des insectes laissent présager des ajustements rapides à des changements environnementaux. Un bilan global, difficile à établir pour l’instant, doit donc être réalisé globalement à l’échelle de l’écosystème forestier qui tienne compte de toutes les interrelations entre les différents compartiments qui le composent.One of the main components of ongoing climate change is the increase in temperature, which is a key factor in the activity, development and distribution of insects. Some remarkable changes have already been observed on some forest pest species: an increase in the number of generations of borers, the extension of the range of pine processionary caterpillars or of oak buprestids, etc. However, climate change affects both phytophagous insect species and their natural enemies and host tree species. Furthermore, it can be hypothesized that the significant adaptive capacities of insects will produce rapid adjustments to environmental changes. While it is difficult for the time being to make an overall assessment, the latter should be conducted globally at the forest ecosystem scale taking into account all the interrelations between the various compartments that make up the ecosystem
