Recentemente sono stati sviluppati nuovi metodi per il controllo climatico degli edifici, al fine del risparmio energetico. Le tecniche di controllo moderne richiedono la conoscenza dei carichi termici non solo real time, ma anche futuri. Per questo motivo, è necessario un modello matematico dell'edificio per effettuare una predizione. Tali modelli sono noti in letteratura come white, grey o black box.
