This thesis examines the significance of the unauthorised independent photography of the April Fifth Movement during the April 1976 demonstrations in Tiananmen Square. These were the first large-scale expressions of popular resistance to the ruling Chinese Communist Party since the birth of the People’s Republic in 1949.
