A TRANSLATION SHIFT ANALYSIS OF VERB PHRASE IN ACADEMIC PAPER BY TRANSLATION BUREAUS OF UMM STUDENTS

Translation is a process of rendering a source language into the target language to ensure that the prominent ideas or messages of the two will be approximately similar. In translating a text, by and large, translation shift frequently occurs. Translation shift is commonly characterized by a changing from the source text (ST) to the target text (TT). In addition, the emergence of translation shift is due to some reasons. This study was aimed at investigating the shift patterns of verb phrase (VP) in academic paper translation by UMM students and finding out the underlying reasons related to why the translators committed translation shift in the text they translated. The type of research design employed in this study was descriptive qualitative research. The source of the data was taken from the translation bureaus of English Languange Department students specializing in Translation course at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The obtained data were processed through several stages namely collecting data, classifying data, analyzing data, and drawing a conclusion. Moreover, the researcher conducted an interview with the translators concerning on the attained data. Grounded on the results of the study, it can be concluded that out of five selected data from the academic paper translation in the fields of fields of law, sociology, civil engineering, communication science, and food science and technology, there are several verb phrase patterns that change from the ST to the TT. The changing VP patterns in the data comprises (1) the shift from passive verb to active verb, (2) the shift from active to passive verb, (3) the shift from verbal structure to nominal structure, (4) the shift from verb to adjective, and (5) double translation shift patterns. In addition, the result of the study also indicates that the translation shift committed by the translators are based upon some considerations such as attempting to make the target text sound natural and easily understandable, prioritizing the contents of the target text, obtaining contentment, and considering grammar aspects. Finally, the writer expects that this thesis can be a reference for those who are interested in studying and investigating more about translation shift
