AN ANALYSIS OF REALIA: ONOMATOPOEIA IN THE TRANSLATION OF WEBTOON COMIC NEW NORMAL: CLASS 8

Onomatopoeia is the formation of a word that has the similar written text and sound as the sounds they represent. Onomatopoeic words are kind of social cultural realia which are considered difficult to deal with since they have no obvious equivalent in translating. This research aimed at investigating the English onomatopoeia findings in Webtoon comic New Normal: Class 8 and analyzing the strategies in translating English onomatopoeia into Indonesian applied by the translator of the Webtoon comic which is written in English and Indonesian. Qualitative research design is applied in this study. The data are analyzed by means of descriptive. The researcher involves five episodes randomly from New Normal: Class 8 Webtoon comic in this study. To support the necessary data, the researcher uses human as instrument and document analysis as a technique. The validity expert is conducted in this study by one of the lecturers in English Language and Education Department whose expertise is in translation and linguistics. It is revealed that 128 onomatopoeias found in the Webtoon comic and only three strategies applied by the translator. The strategies are maintenance (eighteen onomatopoeias), loan translation (nineteen onomatopoeias), and adaptation (ninety-one onomatopoeias) which is the frequently-applied strategy by the translator. The researcher also obtains that several English onomatopoeias verbalizing words in expressing sound indicated that Indonesian has more various onomatopoeias in the Webtoon comic
