AN ANALYSIS OF TEACHER’S STRATEGIES IN TEACHING READING FOR IX GRADE IN SMP NEGERI 2 NGANTANG

Reading is very important skill in learning language. Reading becomes one of the basic skills in English which has an important role to support other basic skills. Reading is also certainly an important activity for expanding knowledge of a language. The teacher has to teach how to read well in reading. In teaching reading, the teacher has to use some strategies. By applying some of strategies in teaching reading, it is expected that the students will be interested in learning reading. This research aimed at investigating the teacher’s strategies in teaching reading for IX grade in SMP Negeri 2 Ngantang and the students’ response toward the teacher’s strategies in teaching reading. The researcher implemented descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were the IX grade students and the English teacher at SMP Negeri 2 Ngantang. Observation checklist and interview guide were used in order to collect the data. The result of the study revealed that the English teacher used three strategies in teaching reading for IX grade in SMP Negeri 2 Ngantang. The strategies included, (1) The Language Experience Approach strategy, (2) Summarizing Text strategy, and (3) Using Text Structure strategy. The teaching strategies used by the teacher got positive response and negative response. Positive response was found when the teacher applied the language experience approach (LEA) strategy in class IX-A and when the teacher applied text structure (UST) strategy in class IX-B and IX-C. It means that the students perceive positively those strategies. It makes the teacher easy to deliver the materials and also help the students to comprehend the materials. Then, negative response was found when the teacher applied summarizing text (ST) strategy in class IX-C and IX-A and when the teacher applied text structure (UST) strategy in class IX-D.
