Aerial photo of Avon Location 1990 and Avon Location 5781 that has also been photographed at ground level. The paddock was harvested in January and the stock have had run of the paddock ever since. The stubble was rolled by a steel pipe beneath the header frame. This process assists the soil animals to return the organic material to the soil quickly. Except for the upward bend in the interceptor bank, the evidence of the gullies has been removed. The topsoil has regained some of its former depth. The stubble on the surface is acting as a blotter and is helping to hold the rain where it falls. Whatever is put into the paddock now stays where it is placed. The area where the native trees were allowed to grow are clearly visible, the trees that were just below the bank have been left to grow and those that were using too much of the area between the banks have been removed for extra pasture growth. It takes a considerable number of years to completely kill the soil. It also takes a similar period of time to restore it to productivity again. Not a task for the faint hearted.
