Leishmania, is a parasite that is present almost everywere in the world. Out of the 53 known species of the genus Leishmania, 31 are transmitted to mammals and at least 20 to humans. Natural transmission occurs via sandflies. Human leishmaniosis is endemic in 98 countries, the people at risk are more than 350 million and the annual deaths more than 59,000. Canine leishmaniosis, is endemic in more than 70 countries, worldwide. In Europe, the most important species, L. infantum, is responsible for both human and canine leishmaniosis.
