This paper analyses and puts into perspective certain manifestations of crisis and distortions of the constitutional orders that operate in African neo-constitutionalism: First, a crisis of electoral democracy, followed by a crisis of normativity or supremacy of the constitution and finally a crisis of political and jurisdictional checks mechanisms. These distortions are dependent of the structural constraints and real factors in the African political process. This paper argues that these abnormalities can be grasped, both legally and politically, as limits of "liberal constitutionalism" in Africa and interpreted as transitory phenomena of a maturing process towards authentically African constitutionalism, which aspires to more effectivenes...
