Old age as a disease: a topic closed in Classical Antiquity

The present study starts from the most ancient mention we have in which dotage is compared to a disease: Aristotle, The Generations of Animals, V IV, 780b. Based on it, the arguments that confirm and those which refute that statement in the Classical Antiquity are discussed. The form in which testimonies are presented allow us to introduce the illnesses that afflicted the elderly and the manner these are collected by old treatises, in a general way, as well as illustrate some of them using examples gathered from specific people. Last but not least, the difficulties we have to face in order to establish the most accurate diagnosis are clear, taking into account the problems we have about the treatment of written sources, the shortage of them and the controversies arisen due to the fact of the analysis made at the archaeological sites.El presente estudio arranca de la mención más antigua que poseemos en la que la ancianidad es equiparada a una enfermedad: Aristóteles, Acerca de la generación de los animales, V IV, 780b. A partir de ella se tratan los argumentos que corroboran esta afirmación y aquellos que la desmienten en la Antigüedad clásica. La forma en la que los testimonios se presentan nos permite indicar las enfermedades que aquejaban a los ancianos y que son recogidas por los tratadistas antiguos, de una forma general, así como ejemplificar algunas de ellas en personajes concretos. Por último, se ponen de manifiesto las dificultades a las que hay que enfrentarse para establecer diagnósticos lo más exactos que sea posible, dada la problemática que plantea el tratamiento de las fuentes escritas, la escasez de estas y las controversias que suscitan los análisis efectuados en los yacimientos arqueológicos
