The first part of this papel reviews the studies that consider the cognitive factors as an indicator for future musical achievement, discussing the relation between musical ability and intelligence as well as intelligence and achievement in musical studies. The results are presented applying Raven's Progressive Matrices Test, General Scale, and Bentley's Musical Abilities Test to a sample of 198 children between 7 and 14 years of age in their first year of musical studies. The second part reviews the research that considers personality as an indicator for achievement, dealing with the relation between personality, musical ability and achievement.
