Nearly all eukaryotic processes are regulated by cyclic phosphorylation-dephosphorylation of cellular signaling proteins, catalyzed by protein kinases and phosphatases, respectively. Until now, the kinases dominated the scientific research, however, in recent years only, the protein phosphatases have emerged as crucial regulators for setting up the levels and amplitude of phosphorylation-driven signaling events. Nevertheless, our molecular and biological awareness of these enzymes is still poor. This thesis aims to gather information on these vital aspects of phosphatase biology.
