Hijra and forced migration from nineteenth-century Russia to the Ottoman Empire

Départ en terre d’islam et migration forcée des Tatars de Crimée vers l’Empire ottoman au xixe siècle. – Nous faisons ici la première analyse socio-politique détaillée du rôle qu’ont joué l’islam traditionaliste de Crimée et la politique colonialiste russe dans le vaste mouvement migratoire des Tatars de Crimée vers l’Empire ottoman après la guerre de Crimée. Basée sur des sources russes, turques, tatares et occidentales, cette analyse recrée les conditions dans lesquelles s’est effectuée cette migration extraordinaire qui a vu, en 1860 et 1861, 200 000 des 300 000 Tatars de Crimée abandonner leur sol natal pour s’installer dans les territoires ottomans correspondant aujourd’hui à la Bulgarie, la Roumanie et la Turquie. Selon nous, les racines de ce mouvement remontent à l’émigration en 1859 de montagnards musulmans du Caucase (Circassiens, Tchétchènes, Lazes, Abkhazes, etc.) vers l’Empire ottoman après la défaite des rebelles antirusses de l’imam Chamil. Le mouvement se répercuta sur la société musulmane instable de Crimée. Nous exposons les mécanismes internes qui provoquèrent la migration de cette société – identification extra-territoriale prémoderne à l’Empire ottoman, le Dar al Islam (le royaume de l’islam) ; désir de protéger les traditions patriarcales musulmanes de Crimée de l’influence des infidèles (les colons russes) – ainsi que les influences extérieures (destructions de villages par les cosaques pendant la guerre de Crimée, confiscation massive des terres par les pomeshchiks). Nous présentons également la première étude en anglais sur l’abandon de la steppe du Kubanet de l’Ukraine du sud par les Nogaïs, un groupe ethnique apparenté aux Tatars de Crimée.This article presents the first in-depth socio-political analysis of the role of traditionalist Crimean Islam and Russian colonialist policies incausing a vast emigration of Crimean Tatars from their ancestral homeland to the Ottoman Empire following the Crimean War. Using Russian, Turkish, Tatar and Western sources we recreate the conditions for this extraordinary migration that saw 200,000 of the Russian Empire’s 300,000 Crimean Tatars abandon their ancestral homeland for Ottoman lands in what is today modern day Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey in the years 1860-1861. We trace the beginning of this movement to the emigration of Caucasian highlander Muslims (such as the Circassians, Chechens, Lazes, Abkhaz, etc.) to the Ottoman Empire in 1859 following the defeat of Sheikh Shamil’s anti-Russian guerrillas. The emigration of Caucasian Muslims had a ripple effect on the unstable Crimean Muslim society of the nineteenth century. We show that there were internal mechanisms operating within Crimean Muslim society that led to this extraordinary migration (such as a pre-modern, extraterritorial identification with the Ottoman Empire as the Dar al Islam, i.e. realm of Islam; a desire to preserve traditional-patriarchal Crimean Islamic traditions from infidel influence of Russian colonists) as well as outside influences (such as Cossack destruction of Crimean Tatar villages during the Crimean War; massive loss of land by Crimean Tatars to Russian landlord-pomeshchiks). We also present the first study in English on the abandonment of the Kuban steppe and south Ukrainian steppe by the Nogai Tatars (a sub-group related to the Crimean Tatars)
