De Governador Valadares e Criciúma para Boston

The recent emigration of Brazilian people, in the late twentieth century, has placed Brazil in the new flow of worldwide population. Through the analysis of different points of departure, this paper intends to demonstrate that the migratory process does not only result from a rational choice, but also social networks (kinship and friendship) in which men and women are placed, contributing to new arrangements of family and gender relationships. The objective is to analyze the aspect of the social networks of the new emigrants coming from Criciúma and Governador Valadares and heading to Boston in the United States, showing how complex friendships, and economic and family relationships have been built up between these places. Following the trajectory of the emigrants, the work discusses data from fieldwork in Criciúma (SC) and in the Boston area, in the United States. The data, emerged from the interviews and participant observation, has shown that women do not just wait in their homeland for their husbands or children to return, but have an integral participation in the process and helping to form the migration networks. The data also made evident other points of migration besides Governador Valadares (MG), suggesting that social networks of the Brazilian migration have matured.No final do século XX, a recente emigração de brasileiros para o exterior inseriu o Brasil nos novos fluxos da população mundial. Esse artigo pretende demonstrar, a partir da análise de diferentes pontos de partida dos emigrantes brasileiros, que a migração não é resultado apenas de uma escolha racional, mas de estratégias familiares nas quais homens e mulheres estão inseridos, contribuindo para re-arranjos das relações familiares e de gênero. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a configuração das redes sociais dos novos emigrantes brasileiros partindo de Criciúma e Governador Valadares rumo a Boston, nos Estados Unidos, evidenciando como essas cidades construíram complexas relações afetivas, econômicas e familiares entre os dois lugares. Para percorrer a trajetória dos emigrantes o trabalho de campo realizou-se em dois lugares em Criciúma (SC) e na região de Boston, nos Estados Unidos. Os dados coletados a partir das entrevistas e observação participante têm revelado que as mulheres não apenas esperam por seus maridos ou filhos, mas participam efetivamente do processo integrando e articulando redes de migração. Os dados evidenciam também a configuração de outros pontos de partida, além da cidade de Governador Valadares (MG), demonstrando o amadurecimento das redes sociais na migração dos brasileiros
