This study examines the Madrid town hall notaries and their substitutes between 1590 and 1690 and the methods they used in order to pass their titles on to their direct descendents. It also examines the ways in wich others attempted, through underhand means, to gain these titles. In order to clarify who were the title holders and who were the substitutes notaries, I have incluided a list of both groups at the end of the study.El presente estudio versa sobre las sucesiones dadas en las dos escribanías del ayuntamiento de la villa de Madrid entre los años 1590 y 1610, reconstruyendo quiénes fueron sus titulares y quiénes los sustitutos nombrados oficialmente, atendiendo además a los suplentes que cubrieron en ellas breves espacios temporales....
