Situé dans la Cordillère orientale équatorienne, le volcan englacé Cotopaxi (5897 m) est l’un des appareils les plus actifs d’Equateur. Au cours des deux derniers millénaires, le Cotopaxi a connu en moyenne une éruption par siècle dont l’Indice d’Explosivité Volcanique a égalé ou dépassé 3. Ces éruptions ont provoqué une fonte partielle du glacier sommital et des lahars volumineux ont dévalé ses flancs en suivant les trois réseaux de drainage principaux : les rivières Pita-Esmeraldas vers le nord, celles de Cutuchi-Pastaza vers le sud-ouest et de Tambo-Tamboyacu-Napo vers l’est.
