The aim of this paper is to present English literary works of the12th and 13th centuries. The Norman Conquest of 1066 was long considered a radical break in British history. Today stress is often laid on greater historical continuity – thus relativising the impact of the Conquest. Many historians, in particular, emphasise the re-emergence of a feeling of national unity as early as the mid-12th century. One can wonder whether one of the effects of the Conquest was to reduce English writers to absolute silence, and the answer is “no”.
