Paroles et silences

The aim of this paper is to present English literary works of the12th and 13th centuries. The Norman Conquest of 1066 was long considered a radical break in British history. Today stress is often laid on greater historical continuity – thus relativising the impact of the Conquest. Many historians, in particular, emphasise the re-emergence of a feeling of national unity as early as the mid-12th century. One can wonder whether one of the effects of the Conquest was to reduce English writers to absolute silence, and the answer is “no”. Of course a very large number of texts were written in Latin (though the Englishness of the chronicles is already striking) or in French. So what were the main features of Early Middle English literary works? These include a small manuscript circulation, the use of regional dialects, the copying of Anglo-Saxon prose works, the carrying on of the Anglo-Saxon homiletic and religious tradition in the West Midlands, and intense patriotism (for example Layamon’s Brut). Things changed with the years 1250-1350, when new types of literature began circulating. Though the religious literature characteristic of the previous period continued, codexes such as the Auchinleck Ms. or British Library Ms. Harley 2253 testify to the existence and high quality of secular romances and lyrics. And even though the influence of French language and culture remained strong, the triumph of English over French was on its way. At the beginning of the 14th century a new English nation had definitely come into existence.Le but de l’article est de présenter les œuvres de langue anglaise des XIIe et XIIIe siècles. L’arrivée des Normands en Angleterre a longtemps été décrite comme un cataclysme, une rupture totale. De nos jours, les signes de continuité ou d’innovation sont davantage soulignés et les historiens parlent d’un sentiment d’unité nationale anglaise retrouvé dès le XIIe siècle. La question se pose pour la littérature : la Conquête imposa-t-elle un silence absolu aux auteurs de langue anglaise ? La réponse est non même si l’article rappelle le grand nombre de textes rédigés alors en latin (mais les chroniques surprennent par leur anglicité) ou en français. Quelles sont les caractéristiques des œuvres de langue anglaise antérieures à la grande époque de Chaucer? Un nombre de copies restreint, des textes écrits pour des auditoires régionaux, une continuité marquée avec les siècles anglo-saxons dans les Midlands de l’Ouest, des œuvres avant tout religieuses (sermons en prose, vies de saints, manuels de prédication), un patriotisme anglais marqué (Brut de La3amon). Les années 1250-1350 montrent une évolution évidente : la littérature abandonne alors son fond essentiellement religieux. À côté de vies de saints, de textes religieux et documentaires, les codex Auchinleck et Harley 2253 présentent ainsi les premiers romans en vers ou poèmes lyriques. On y décèle une influence du continent évidente. Toutefois, la transformation, l’anglicisation le sont tout autant. On peut affirmer qu’en ce début du XIVe siècle, une nouvelle nation anglaise est définitivement reconstruite
