A lexical study of the Old English version of Bede’s Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum throws some light on the translator’s conception of the work, and on the role he attributes to Bede. More than a historian, or even a writer, Bede is a teacher. The Old English equivalents of Latin discere, auditores, discupuli open a window on the way Anglo-Saxons assimilated the contents of books, and on the advantages they found in written texts
