Examining Ciaran Carson’s (b. 1948) use of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet in two of his poems, the article demonstrates how Carson appropriates earlier literary material to create new poems and how the activity of re-writing itself is an essential part of meaning-making. In “The Irish for No”, Romeo and Juliet is juxtaposed and contrasted with Belfast reality in order to emphasize what is particular in time and space as well as to draw our attention to the precariousness of perceptions and representations of reality. In “Hamlet”, Hamlet is taken as starting-point for examining form as an instrument of sense-making.
