The Corporatisation of Global Anglicanism

This article explores the corporate nature of missionary Anglicanism and its architectural consequences in Britain’s empire during the nineteenth century. It is argued that in highlighting the incorporated status of ecclesiastical organisations such as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts and the Colonial Bishoprics’ Fund we are able to reach a better understanding of not just how the objectives of these organisations mapped onto their operations “in the field” but also how the form of the accompanying ecclesiastical architecture was affected by their agenda. It is suggested that the influence and authority of these organisations, through their patronage, gave distinct shape to much of the Anglican missionary enterprise during this period, leading to a form of architecture that was in many respects a direct expression of the ideals and practices of the English Church as a constitutionally incorporated entity. This was therefore an architecture that can be seen to have both embodied and represented a certain “corporate identity.”Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit dem Firmencharakter des missionarischen Anglikanismus und der aus diesem im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts entstandenen Architektur im Britischen Kolonialreich. Wenn man den kapitalgesellschaftlichen Status kirchlicher Organisationen wie der Gesellschaft für die Verbreitung des Evangeliums im Ausland (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts) und der Bischöflichen Kolonialkasse (Colonial Bishoprics’ Fund) in den Vordergrund rückt, wird nicht nur besser verständlich, wie deckungsgleich die Ziele dieser Organisationen und ihre Maßnahmen vor Ort waren, sondern auch wie die Form der damit einhergehenden Sakralarchitektur von diesem Programm beeinflusst wurde. Die Vermutung liegt nahe, dass Einfluss und Autorität dieser Organisationen aus ihrer Bauherrenfunktion heraus in dieser Zeit die Form des Anglikanischen Missionsunternehmens erkennbar prägten und zu einer Architekturform führten, die in vielerlei Hinsicht ein direkter Ausdruck der Ideale und der Praxis der Englischen Kirche als kapitalgesellschaftlich konstituierte Einheit war. Daher kann diese Architektur sowohl als Verkörperung wie auch als Repräsentation einer gewissen Unternehmensidentität (corporate identity) gelesen werden.Este artículo aborda la naturaleza corporativa del anglicanismo misionero y sus consecuencias arquitectónicas en el imperio británico durante el siglo XIX. Sostiene que si se ahonda en la dimensión corporativa de las organizaciones eclesiásticas tales como la Sociedad para la difusión del evangelio en el en extranjero (the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts) y el Fondo para los obispados coloniales (el Colonial Bishoprics’ Fund) no sólo se entienden mejor los objetivos de estas entidades reflejados en sus actividades sobre el terreno, sino también cómo afectó su programa a la arquitectura eclesiástica que lo acompañó. El artículo argumenta que la influencia y la autoridad de estas organizaciones, a través de su mecenazgo, dieron una forma diferenciada a buena parte de la actividad misionera anglicana durante este periodo, y origen a una manifestación arquitectónica, que, en muchos aspectos, fue una expresión directa de los ideales y las prácticas de la Iglesia de Inglaterra como entidad corporativa. Por ello, puede considerarse que esta arquitectura plasmaba y representaba cierta «identidad corporativa».Cet article étudie la structure entrepreneuriale de l’anglicanisme missionnaire et ses répercussions architecturales dans l’Empire britannique au XIXe siècle. Le texte part de la supposition que, en soulignant le rôle des organisations ecclésiastiques intégrées dans l’Église anglaise, parmi lesquelles la Société pour la diffusion de l’Évangile dans les territoires étrangers (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts) et le Fonds des évéchés coloniaux (Colonial Bishoprics’ Fund), l’on comprend mieux l’articulation entre les objectifs de ces organisations et leurs opérations « sur site », ainsi que l’influence de leur programme sur la forme de l’architecture ecclésiastique. L’hypothèse générale est que l’influence et l’autorité de ces organisations de par leur position de commanditaire sont à l’origine de la forme caractéristique d’une grande partie des opérations des missions anglicanes de cette époque ayant produit une forme d’architecture qui traduit à de nombreux égards les idéaux et la pratique de l’Église anglaise en tant qu’entité « constituée légalement en entreprise ». Cette architecture peut donc être lue à la fois comme incarnation et représentation d’une certaine identité d’entreprise.Questo articolo esplora la natura corporativa dell’anglicanesimo missionario e le sue conseguenze architettoniche sull’Impero britannico nel corso del diciannovesimo secolo. Il testo parte dall’assunto che, mettendo in luce la situazione delle organizzazioni ecclesiastiche « incorporate » alla Chiesa inglese – tra le quali la Società per la propagazione del Vangelo all’estero (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts) e il Fondo delle diocesi coloniali (Colonial Bishoprics’ Fund) –, sia possibile capire meglio non solo come i fini di queste organizzazioni corrispondessero alle loro operazioni sul territorio, ma anche come la forma dell’architettura ecclesiastica correlata sia stata influenzata dal loro programma. L’idea di fondo è che queste organizzazioni autorevoli e influenti, attraverso il loro patrocinio, abbiano modellato gran parte delle imprese missionarie anglicane dell’epoca, portando ad una forma architettonica che per molti aspetti era un’espressione diretta degli ideali e delle pratiche della Chiesa inglese in quanto entità costituzionalmente incorporata.
