Beer brewing, selling and consumption is, as in many African societies, of great importance among the Kapsiki. Brewing is a complex process that has at least two major variations, leading to the “red” and the “white” variety. Both are clearly distinguished and have quite different functions. The red "male" beer contrasts with the white “female” brew in many ways: ritual application versus market orientation, male versus female interests and symbolic versus economic motives.
