Adapting to Reformasi: Democracy, Human Rights, and Civil Society in the Indonesian Islamist Discourse

This paper examines the way in which the concepts of democracy, human rights, and civil society have been received by Indonesian Islamism from the early 1990s until the present time. It shows that the model of an Islamic “transcendental democracy” has taken form first and foremost by opposing the Western paradigm, but that, in the process, it has integrated some of the latter’s concepts. Likewise, both the concepts of human rights and civil society have been the object of a process of re-appropriation by Islamism, with the obvious goal of proposing a politically acceptable Islamic alternative in these times of all-out democracy, but also with a less openly stated goal of promoting the implementation of the shariah.Cet article examine la façon dont les concepts de démocratie, de droits de l’homme et de société civile ont été adoptés par l’islamisme indonésien, des années 1990 à nos jours. Il montre comment le modèle d’une « démocratie transcendantale » islamique a pris forme avant tout en réaction contre le paradigme occidental, bien qu’en intégrant au passage certains de ses concepts. De même, les concepts de droits de l’homme et de société civile ont fait l’objet d’une réappropriation par l’islamisme, dans le but évident de proposer une alternative politiquement présentable en ces temps de démocratie conquérante et également, mais de façon moins visible, pour promouvoir la mise en place de la shariah
