Whilst the significance of physical exposure to ionising radiation can be empirically ascertained, radiation emergencies also have significant psychosocial impacts which are politically, socially and culturally determined. The nuclear reactor accidents of Chernobyl in 1986 and Fukushima in 2011 have had differential consequences for women, due to differences in space, place and time.
