Jeremy Bentham, ‘The Psychology of Economic Man’, and Behavioural Economics

La section 1 réexamine dans un premier temps l’interprétation traditionnelle des travaux de Bentham, qui sous-évalue leur rôle dans le développement des sciences économiques (excepté des mentions passagères à sa conceptualisation de l’utilité ou sa réduction de la motivation humaine à l’intérêt personnel, et éventuellement une référence à sa discussion du concept de l'utilité marginale décroissante), et dans un second temps, son application du concept de rationalité à l’économie politique. La section 2 présent la thèse centrale de cet article: les intuitions de Bentham sur la psychologie des choix individuels fournit de bonnes raisons pour l’identifier comme un des précurseurs intellectuels de l’économie comportementale. En se fondant sur son interprétation normative du concept de rationalité, Bentham affirme, que la manière dont l’économie traditionnelle ignore le fossé entre le modèle traditionnel du processus de prise de décision humaine et les caractéristiques de la psychologie humaine, affaiblit son utilité non seulement comme science, mais comme guide aux politiques publiques. In section 2, the central thesis of the paper is presented: It is argued that an examination of his insights into the psychology of individual choice supplies good reasons to identify him as an intellectual godfather of behavioural economics. In keeping with the normativity of his concept of rationality, Bentham would maintain that the way in which traditional economics continues to ignore the gulf between its model of human decision-making and the facts of human psychology weakens its usefulness both as a science and as a guide to public policy. Bentham anticipated several modifications to the standard model (for instance loss aversion, the endowment effect, reference dependence, framing, the desire for cognitive ease, and status-quo bias) which have been introduced later by behavioural economics. Section 3 introduces two problems concerning the normativity of economics, the first of which, at least for Bentham, rests upon a false premise, while his substantive notion of rationality insulates him against the second
