This article, questioning on shifts and changes that the concept of work has undergone over time, puts us on the trail of a more critical and cultural reading of the meaning of work. The author reconstructs in stages the phenomenology of various interpretations that the concept of work has had in the West, from the classical era to the present age. In this way, the author traces the historical and cultural roots from which the double character of the concept of work originates: working as a necessary punishment on the one hand, and working as a human fulfillment on the other. The article shows, besides, how the man has not yet got free of this contradiction
