Pour ne prendre que deux exemples, le Daily Post dénonce en 1738 « le luxe à l’opéra » et en 1742 un commentaire de The New Dunciad souligne « le luxe de ses sonorités propres à mettre en péril la virilité ». Les études récentes portant sur le luxe de l’opéra du xviiie siècle s’attachent à des termes comme « efféminé », « étrange(i)té » ou « exotisme » souvent sans reconnaître combien ce discours s’inscrit dans les débats du moment sur le luxe et sur ce que signifiait « l’excès » pour le commerce, la société et la Grande Bretagne en général.
