For decades the assumption was that men composed the majority of international immigrants to the United States, especially from Mexico. Then groundbreaking work in the 1980’s found that at least half of all international immigrants to the United States since the 1930’s have been females. Despite this, both immigration and immigrant legislation continue to be ill-adapted to the needs of immigrant women and their families. Immigrant women in the United States face an unwelcoming and inhospitable environment created by repressive anti-immigrant legislation at both the state and federal levels.
