Bodily skill and the aesthetics of miniaturisation

The interpretation of miniature objects has frequently focused on depositional activities, yet the whole cultural biography of miniatures has much to say regarding how people made, used, and categorised these types of objects within past societies. Production practices must be incorporated into our approaches to miniature objects as the act of production creates conceptual categorisations of the world and sets the tenor for appropriate use and deposition. The production of miniatures must be understood as something distinct from other material culture as they often require not only different categorical associations but also different techniques of production. This chapter explores the bodily techniques and practices associated with the manufacture and use of miniatures.Jusqu’ici l’interprétation de la signification des objets miniatures s’est penchée sur l’étude des rites qui accompagnent la fin de leur utilisation. Pourtant la biographie culturelle de ces objets miniatures peut nous apprendre beaucoup sur ceux qui les ont façonnés, utilisés et classés par catégories. Les techniques de production de ces objets doivent faire partie de leur étude car l’acte même de production des miniatures est la création d’une conceptualisation du monde et donne la raison de leur emploi et destruction ou la raison de l’abandon de leur usage. La production de miniatures doit être séparée du reste de la culture matérielle car les miniatures requièrent souvent des classements par catégories spécifiques mais aussi des techniques de production bien particulières. Cet article a pour but d’explorer les techniques du corps et pratiques qui accompagnent la manufacture et l’usage de ces objets
