In the literature, geographical proximity is often believed to favour interaction, knowledge creation and innovation. In the paper, we criticise two influential approaches that take this statement almost for granted. The first approach examines the role of geographical proximity at the regional level, but ignores other forms of proximity that might affect innovative performance. The second case study approach does account for the role of different forms of proximity, but the impact of each of these is not separated analytically. In addition, it is assumed that proximity in clusters has a positive impact on innovation almost by definition.
