The beginning of the Mesolithic in northern Europe, known in Denmark as the Maglemosian (8500-6550 cal BC), is characterized by some very well-preserved faunal assemblages from peat contexts. These Maglemosian sites also contain bone tools in exceptionally large numbers for the Mesolithic period. The exploitation of all the animal resources, whether as food or as raw material for making bone tools, is a key issue in understanding the subsistence economy of these Mesolithic populations in northern Europe. The Mullerup site (Zealand, Denmark) is presented here in this perspective. The animal resources are exploited in different ways, depending on the species and the requirements for raw materials
