A Broken Idyll: Post-Pastoralism in the Works of George Crumb

Pastoral is one of the oldest and most enduring musical topics, yet most scholarship exploring it in music ends with the beginning of the twentieth century. This paper seeks to examine the expression of the pastoral in the musical output of post-modern composer, George Crumb. In doing so, I argue that the concept of post-pastoralism put forth by Terry Gifford may provide a valuable lens through which to understand musical expressions of the pastoral in the post-modern era. The article ends with a close reading of George Crumb’s chamber work, An Idyll for the Misbegotten, examining the ways in which this musical text sonically evokes post-pastoral sentiments.Bien que le traitement musical de la pastorale remonte à des temps très anciens et se soit poursuivi à travers les siècles, la plupart des travaux universitaires qui l’étudient s’arrêtent au début du XXe siècle. L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser l’expression de la pastorale dans la production du compositeur post-moderne George Crumb. Ceci m’amène à démontrer que le concept de post-pastorale proposé par Terry Gifford est susceptible de fournir un précieux instrument pour la compréhension des expressions musicales de la pastorale à l’époque post-moderne. L’article s’achève par une lecture d’une pièce de musique de chambre de George Crumb, An Idyll for the Misbegotten, afin d’examiner les moyens sonores mis en œuvre par le texte musical pour évoquer des sentiments post-pastoraux
