The purpose of this paper is to outline the essential tenet of the classroom ecology paradigm and to explain how it provides a useful heuristic when examining context with physical education. The first part of the paper describes how three task systems operate interdependently within lessons to determine the academic work that gets done. Descriptive accounts of the instructional, managerial and social task systems are provided, together with an explanation of how the accountability strategies put in place are critical in mediating original teacher intentions.
