«Dismantling» Ondaatje’s «Terrible Letters»: Metaphor, Metonymy and Exploding Narrative in The English Patient

In providing a narrative in which metaphors are repeatedly reiterated and revised to the point where they are also functioning metonymically, Ondaatje’s The English Patient achieves the novelistic dialogism so justly beloved by Kristeva and Bakhtin. The English Patient operates as a constant dialogue between these two substitutive forces: of association for metaphor, and of contiguity for metonymy. The split between micro-and macro-context so begged by this trajectory of metonymy (in which a metaphor succeeds autonomously in a micro-context and metonymically within a macro-context) asks the reader to perform repeated examinations in which narrative knowledge is tested and applied.En produisant un récit dans lequel les métaphores sont reprises et modifiées systématiquement au point de fonctionner également de façon métonymique, Ondaatje dans le Patient anglais crée un dialogue constant entre deux forces interchangeables : celle de l’association pour la métaphore et celle de la contiguïté pour la métonymie.
