In providing a narrative in which metaphors are repeatedly reiterated and revised to the point where they are also functioning metonymically, Ondaatje’s The English Patient achieves the novelistic dialogism so justly beloved by Kristeva and Bakhtin. The English Patient operates as a constant dialogue between these two substitutive forces: of association for metaphor, and of contiguity for metonymy.
