The Postcolonial Iraqi Novel : Themes and Sources of Inspiration

This paper examines the themes and sources of inspiration of the Iraqi postcolonial novel, limiting the research to two periods : the years immediately following the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 and those after 2014, with a brief survey of the Iraqi novel before these two periods. Through a number of selected texts, the reader will be introduced to the narrative that establishes the postcolonial identity of the Iraqi novel. All these works of fiction are written in Arabic. This study highlights their realistic and melancholic tenor. The devastating impact of the 2003 war, the subsequent ISIS invasion are touched on from different perspectives. These novels analyse the reasons and influences which caused the evolution of Iraqi society. The novels chosen are written by local Iraqi novelists who live in Iraq and are in touch with the reality of everyday life. Varying in their themes, techniques, and dates of publication, they represent the typical features of the modern Iraqi novel.Cet article examine les thèmes et sources d’inspiration du roman irakien, en limitant cette recherche à deux moments dans le passé récent : les années qui ont immédiatement suivi l’invasion américaine de l’Irak en 2003 et celles inspirées par les événements de 2014, avec un survol des romans irakiens antérieurs à ces deux périodes charnières. À partir d’un choix représentatif de textes de fiction, le lecteur sera initié à la narration qui établit l’identité postcoloniale. Toutes ces œuvres sont écrites en arabe et ce travail met en lumière le ton mélancolique et réaliste qui y prévaut. Les effets dévastateurs de la guerre de 2003 et l’invasion de l’État islamique, qui en a été la conséquence sont examinés d’une multiplicité de points de vue. Ces romans, qui analysent l’évolution de la société irakienne, sont tous écrits par des romanciers ancrés dans la culture locale irakienne et s’inscrivent dans une typologie du roman irakien moderne
